Introduction to Animal Husbandry Jammu
Livestock is one of the widely
expanding sectors and over the years the sector has established its importance in development of
rural economy. The sector not only supplements income of the farmers but also provides gainful
employment on one hand and supplements the vital and varied nutritional requirements of the
individual.
Animal Husbandry Department Jammu came
into existence in 1982 after the bifurcation of Animal Husbandry Department at divisional level.
The main aim of the Department is the Socio economic upliftment of the average farmer The policies
of the department have been development of cattle, poultry, equines and fodder production with
main objectives of :-
- Increasing milk production
- Increasing egg production
- Increasing poultry meat production
- Increasing draught power
- Creating employment avenues
The department has been working with a mission to explore/ adopt/ introduce/ promote/ organize/
undertake all activities viable for overall improvement of livestock and poultry for better
productivity/output and subsequently create gainful self-employment avenues.
The department is headed by Director Animal Husbandry Jammu, The Department has a well-knit network
of staff and institutions by way of Divisional sector and district sector schemes. There are three
Joint Directors i.e.
- The Joint Director Poultry, In-charge of poultry Development
and Marketing
- The joint Director ARV, In-charge of Vaccines production,
animal healthcare and Disease Diagnostic facilities of the department.
- The Manager Frozen
Semen Bank, In-charge of Cattle development.
These Joint Directors are providing technical inputs to all the districts manned by the Chief Animal
Husbandry Officers of the rank of Deputy Directors, who is supported by the subject matter
specialist i.e.
- Livestock Development Officer/ Block Vety. Officers for Cattle
Development
- Poultry Development Officer for Poultry sector
- Officer Incharge ABS for arranging germplasm
- Disease Investigation Officer for providing disease
diagnostic facilities etc
- Supdt District Vety Hospitals
- Manager Hatchery
He is further supported by field level institutions like Hospitals, dispensaries, A.I. centres,
Poultry Extension Centres, Mobile dispensaries, Mule Breeding centres, Poultry Demonstration
centres, Hatcheries etc headed by Veterinary Asstt Surgeons, other para vets staff and class IV
employees etc.
